Jazz Levelled Classes PDF Print E-mail
  • Jazz I: Students in this level will experience floor stretches/warm-up, barre stretches, centre barre, a focus on jazz isolations, introduction to jazz port de bras, a variety of jazz walks, and short combinations of varying styles throughout the year. These preparations will assist in the later mastery of kicks, turns, and leaps common to all jazz styles today. It is recommended that students take a minimum of a ballet class along with the jazz course. Ballet technique is an integral foundation for jazz.
  • Jazz II: Students in this level will continue to expand on floor stretches done in the previous level, progression in centre barre, jazz walk combinations, turns, jazz adage, short combinations, introduction to comparisons in different jazz styles: modern, rock, African, and lyrical, and an emphasis on hops, leaps, and jumps. It is recommended that students take a minimum of a ballet class along with the jazz course. Ballet technique is an integral foundation for jazz.

  • Jazz III: This level requires that the student be enrolled in a minimum of a ballet III level course as well as this. Students in this level start a new pre-stretch warm-up that helps prepare the muscles for the rigorous work ahead. Floor stretches again is key to starting a jazz class to keep muscles elastic and avoid injury. In this level is the introduction of the jazz barre. Understanding of ballet technique is essential to attempt the jazz barre and is not for the beginning student. Turns and leaps become increasingly difficult; changing in direction, multiple numbers, straight legged or in attitude, layouts, and emphasis in comparisons in height with movement.

  • Jazz IV: This advanced level requires that the student take at least 1 ballet class (level III+), Jazz IV, and one of the following: another ballet level III or higher, modern, or another jazz course. This requirement must be met to allow the student to properly advance by maintaining conditioning and stamina. Jazz IV students continue a similar structure as the previous level with increasing difficulty. They are also encouraged to participate in choreographic assignments, video studies, and history reports. Continued focus on proper technique with differing performance aspects investigated.
